Did you know the recovery process is vital if you want a strong and successful oral health? Well, it’s true, especially after wisdom tooth extraction. So, to help you properly heal after your wisdom teeth have been removed, our Midwest Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery dental team has the following tips for you:

Tip 1: Keep a clean piece of gauze over the pocket of the missing tooth. Apply pressure for 20 minutes to help stop the bleeding. If needed, continue this process with a new gauze pad until the bleeding stops. Avoid rinsing or spitting for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Tip 2: Ice the affected area with an ice pack. This will reduce the swelling in your face. Apply the ice pack for 20 minutes on one side, 20 minutes on the other. Repeat this process as necessary.

Tip 3: Take the prescribed medications your doctor gave to you to relieve the pain. Take over-the-counter Ibuprofen to reduce swelling and alleviate any discomfort. If you feel you need something stronger, you can take the prescribed pain reliever and take as directed.

Tip 4: Have a liquid diet until the numbness wears off. We recommend softer foods for the first few days and gradually working up to a normal diet. Please avoid snacking on sharp foods like chips or pretzels.

Tip 5: Continue to brush your teeth but avoid brushing the teeth neighboring the affected area for the first 24 hours. On the second day, feel free to brush all of your teeth but be as gentle and as careful as possible. Please stay away from commercial mouth rinses.
